Project details

The project, situated in the scenic landscape between Karcham and Wangtoo in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, is a 1000 MW run-of-the-river hydro power plant. Operating with 4 X 250 MW units housed in an underground powerhouse, the primary purpose is to generate clean electricity by harnessing the potential of the Sutlej River.The project aims to produce 4463.88 GWh of dependable energy per annum, effectively reducing CO2 emissions and addressing a capacity shortage of about 15.46% recorded in the financial year 2006-07. The technology is regarded as a ‘high confidence’ technology by the Airport Carbon Accreditation standard.The electricity produced is integrated into the NEWNE grid, providing a sustainable alternative, and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. By replacing an equivalent amount of energy generated from fossil fuel-intensive thermal power plants, the project actively addresses environmental concerns and aligns with the broader goal of transitioning towards cleaner energy sources.
